Hades and Persephone: The Ascension

Third part of the series. I looks like it will be split into 4 parts.
First and Second Parts, if you haven't read them.
I sat beside Hades on his couch, watching Hermes bow before us. He lazily twirled a lock of my hair between his fingers. My hair had grown to a dark brown color during my months in the Underworld. I had noticed my skin had paled as well. I sat up straighter, my body leaning towards Hermes as something fluttered in my chest. In my time here I had not seen one person from above. Was this my freedom?
“Rise, Hermes.” Hades said casually. “Why have you come?”
“Lord Hades, I come in behest of my father, your brother, Zeus. He has asked that you release Persephone to her mother. In her grief, Demeter has kept seed from man. Her sorrow has frozen the very earth itself. For the sake of the world, please return life to the earth.”
The Lord of the Underworld sighed, sitting up and stared down at the Messenger. “What would I benefit from this? I do not reside above the world. In fact, such a thing would bolster my ranks.”
“You would have the gratitude of the King of Olympus.”
I watched him contemplate this, and he looked back at me. “What of you, my love? Do you still wish to return home?”
I nodded slowly. “Don’t misunderstand, my lord. I now understand what you have meant, but my mother needs me.”
His smile, which was no longer cold, held a hint of sadness. “I suppose I cannot deny you then. You may return to your mother.” He looked to Hermes. “Tell Zeus that I accept his gratitude.”
He stood and held his hand out to me. When I took it, he pulled me into his arms and pressed his lips to mine. I felt some tiny seeds pass through my mouth as we kissed. I pulled away, wide eyes, with the taste of pomegranate on my tongue.
He smiled arrogantly at me and whispered. “I’ll never truly let you go.”
Dumbfounded, I allowed him to lead me to Hermes. “Guide her safely to her mother.”
The Messenger took me into his arms, gently and lifted into the air. The winding caverns of the underworld passed by in a blur. We passed through the gates and I had my first gaze and triple headed Cerberus, who merely opened an eye to watch us pass. Then we were over the river Styx and through more caverns. Finally, we reached the surface. I covered my eyes when the light of the sun hit my face. It had been many months since I had seen Apollo’s rays and they were fierce against my skin.
I looked around in shock. The ground was covered in several inches of icy snow as far as I could see. The trees were bare of any life, just gray pointed branches. “My mother has done this?”
Hermes nodded. “She was in morning at your loss.”
            “Daughter!”
I barely had time to turn before I was in my mother’s arms. I heard her sobs of joy and relief. Her hands ran over me as if to reassure herself I was there. “Are you alright? Did he do anything?”
I embraced her, relieved to be with her again. “I am alright, mother. I have returned to you.”
She pulled back and inspected me solemnly. “Persephone, think very hard. Did you eat anything during your stay?”
I opened my mouth to assure her that I didn’t and stopped, remembering our parting kiss. “Not intentionally, mother, but in the end he tricked me into eating three pomegranate seeds. It is only seeds. Surely, I could not be forced to stay for only three.”

Her eyes burned and the air around us began to form tiny crystals. She took my hand. “Come. We will speak to Zeus about this at once. Hermes, take us to your father.”

Excerpt:

That night he took me to dinner. We supped on chicken and mushroom crepes outside a small café, enjoying the music of the street bands. As we ate, he spoke of his family.
We traveled to the top of the Eiffel tower to view the city from the world’s tallest structure. I shivered at the cold wind and Dimitri wrapped his arm around me. After a moment of hesitation, I relaxed and rested my head on his shoulder. For the first time in years I felt at peace.
“So, tell me something about you,” he said.
“I hunt demons.”
“Besides that. Hmm, how about where you are from? Is Paris your home city?”
“No, I’m from Italy.”
“Really?” he asked, surprise showing on his face. “I couldn’t tell; you have no accent.”
“I lost it in my travels.”
“Where have you traveled?” he asked, rubbing my arm.
“Europe, Asia, Africa, all over,” I said.
“So you’re a world traveler.”
“That’s where the demons are.”
“Back to the demons. Your life seems to revolve around them.”
A couple passed us. Both were smiling down at their son, who stood between them, holding their hands. A lump rose in my throat as memories threatened to overwhelm me. I stared at the city below.
“That’s what being a hunter is,” I said. “You should know.”
“Yes, but I have friends and family in my life. You don’t seem to have that.”
“Those are a liability.”
He lifted up my chin, so his gaze met mine. “Not if you find the right one.”

Dimitri’s mouth covered mine in a gentle kiss and my eyelids closed, enjoying the sweetness. My heart raced as I explored his soft lips.

Five: Elemental Enmity Book 1

Rayla Tate dreams of escaping her ordinary world for a bright future in the art world. Throw in an overbearing aunt who is keeping major secrets, a disgruntled best friend tagging along to college, and a bunch of fae warriors waiting in the wings to claim her the minute she leaves her sleepy little town, and Rayla's dreams are about to shatter.

She soon discovers she is a coveted Elemental with power she never knew she possessed--a power that could change the world. Everywhere she turns another man tries to woo her. The weird part is she's drawn to each one of them. Who are these strange men, and what dark power do they hold over her? Rayla must quickly learn to fend off these beautiful and seductive pursuers using any means necessary or find herself lost to the fae world forever.

Dark Matter: Elemental Enmity Book 2

Rayla Tate’s dreams for the future shattered when she discovered she was an Elemental capable of manipulating matter. Thrust, once again, into the magical fae realm of Faeresia, she has an important choice to make. But now that she has Heath to contend with, deciding between Zach and Luke is the least of her concerns. Tall, dark and lethal to her will, her attraction to Heath eclipses all she has experienced with any other lord, but he is using compulsion to wear her down. If only she could trust her feelings?

In a desperate attempt to escape Heath, she accepts the help of a little troll and finally gets what she wants; however, her relief is short lived. Things go terribly wrong when a dark force closes in on her, threatening to steal her burgeoning power before she even has a chance to test her abilities. Now, with Rayla as their captive, the Order will stop at nothing to create a male Elemental, and willing or not, Rayla is the key.

Caught up in the age-old battle for dominance between human and fae, only one question matters to her now—will she be able to save those she loves most without losing herself in the process? Or will she be forever haunted by the choices she alone can make?

Genesis: Elemental Enmity Book 3

Having just escaped the nefarious plans of the Order, Rayla Tate thinks all she has to do now is rescue her family and sort through her feelings, but bonding with five men might just be her undoing. Not only does she have to deal with all of them reading her mind, Rayla must choose a bondmate before she will be allowed to venture into the mortal realm to save those she loves most.

She has three weeks to get to know each lord, but her journey turns into far more than a simple choice of the heart. Rayla comes face to face with the underhanded dealings of the fae political system where good is a matter of taste and evil lurks under beautiful shells. Long held judgments crumble when she discovers the heart beneath the men she has come to count on. Rayla must overcome long held fears, discover the truth behind the creatures of the dark realms, and conquer her greatest weakness before she can take her place as the new queen of the fae.

However, her world crumbles when she discovers following her heart’s desire might just mean the destruction of the world. Will Rayla have the courage to choose the man who has risked everything to win her, or will she succumb to the manipulations of the fae council and those who would use her power for evil?

One choice: five men. The stakes have never been higher, but which one will prevail?

Horizon: Elemental Enmity Book 4

Evil has many faces—unfortunately, Rayla Tate has seen them all, or so she thinks. Since she learned she was an Elemental, she has been hunted for her power. But Rayla hasn’t met her greatest foe; she hasn’t seen true evil…yet.

Rayla betrayed her bondmate to be with the man she loves. Now that she has Heath at her side, she is ready to face the fae council and move on with her life. Too bad Zach has other ideas. He’s not about to give Rayla up just because his sister got in the way. He will find Rayla and prove to her that he is the man she is meant to be with, even if he has to face the monsters of the dark realms to do it.

Despite her growing feelings for Heath, with every passing day her body gives in to her bond with Zach. Rayla must leave the dark realms or risk losing control of her mind and ultimately her power. Once back in Lombarda, she discovers a secret about her origins that could shake the foundations of the world, both fae and human. There is more at stake than who she is bound to. The Order and the fae both want control of the same thing, and this time it is not her.

Rayla must unite with unlikely allies to destroy the evil plaguing Faeresia. For if she refuses, she will succumb to a compulsion she never could have anticipated and plunge the world and those she loves into darkness or utter oblivion.

Author Bio:

I live in a small town with my husband, two kids, spastic dog, and two lazy cats. I love delving into fantasy. Whether it is reading a book, watching a great movie, or recently, writing something I absolutely love.

I have been focusing on the paranormal, and my first published novel, Five, is a paranormal romance. It is the first book in the Elemental Enmity Series and is about a girl that discovers her role in an age old battle for world dominance between the fae and humans.

One thing I have discovered about myself through this exciting journey of publishing is that I love to see a world I've created come to life. The experience of writing is much more enjoyable than reading for me and that is saying a lot. LOL.

I hope you enjoy my books as much as I do. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will again. I'd love to hear from you. Reach me on www.christierich.com, Twitter, Facebook, goodreads, and my blog.

P.S. If you enjoy my books the best way you can support me is to leave an honest review, and tell your friends if you think they will enjoy my stories. I appreciate your support and feedback.

Hades and Persephone: The Underworld

Here is the second part of the story of Hades and Persephone. If you haven't read the first, it's here.

Persephone, Art by JJLovely

I sighed and crossed my arms as I sat on the couch of my beautiful prison. Drapes of silk and gold beads hung around the room. There was a bed made stuffed with the softest down and covered with silk. Flickering candles reflected off the rubies encrusted in the gold candelabras. Every table in the room sparkled with diamonds, emeralds and other jewels. They were gifts from Hades. I gazed to the center of the room were a banquet table that constantly stayed filled with delicious food and wine.
I was so hungry, but I could not eat. My mother had warned me away from eating the food of the underworld. Those that consumed it were forced to remain forever. I did not wish to be here now, much less for eternity. I sighed again and lay back on the couch, closing my eyes.
The door opened and Hecate stepped in carrying folded clothes. Her silver hair was pulled back from her face and her black silk dress contrasted to her porcelain skin. She was beautiful and ethereal. Hades had given her to me as a handmaiden.
She gave me a gentle. “It is time to bathe, my queen. I have brought fresh robe for you.”
I winced. “Do not call me queen, Hecate. I am merely a prisoner. Hades will realize that we are incompatible. I belong above ground with my mother.”
She gave me a sympathetic look. “I understand how you feel, dear Persephone, however, I must follow my lord’s orders. He wishes you to stay, so stay you must. Now, please, you must bathe, he will be here shortly.”
I snatched the clothes from her, stalked to a curtained doorway, and yanked the silk aside. Steam rose up from the spring in the middle of the room. My feet smacked against the black marble tiles as I made my way to the pool, throwing the clothes down as I went. The water stung my skin as I stepped in. I grabbed the soap from the ledge, scrubbed my skin in quick jerking strokes, and then dove under when I had been completely lathered. I stayed underwater as long as I could, trying to calm myself. Hecate was just following orders; she had no control over my freedom. It was Hades that I must convince to set me free. He should see that I was not meant to be his queen. With new determination, I rose out of the pools and robed myself. When I stepped back into the sleeping room, Hecate was gone. Hades stood before the table, eating grapes. He turned when and stepped in, and a smiled touched his cold lips.
“You look as beautiful as ever, my dear. Did you enjoy your bath? Grapes?” He offered them to me but I shook my head and stared at the ground. He sighed and set them down. “You cannot continue this. I will not have my queen starve.”
“I am not you queen. I do not belong here Hades. Please, you must return me to my mother.” I entreated as I moved closer to him.
He put a cool hand against my cheek. “My dear, daughters must eventually leave their mothers and become wives. It is time for you to bloom, little flower.”
“Flowers cannot bloom without sunlight. How can I bloom underground?”
He sighed. “Persephone, what do you wish in life? To spend you days in meadows and flowers, coddled by you mother? I sense great power in you. Why not use that power? As my queen you would rule here by my side.”
I paused, contemplating what he said. My life before this capture had been as he said. I had spent my days collecting flowers. I ruled over nothing. Even Artemis ruled over the moon.
“Let me ask you, is there another that you favor more than I?”
I shook my head, still thinking on his words. “N-no.”
“Then I ask you give me a chance to win you affections. Think on my words, I offer you a purpose.”

He took my hand and placed his daily gift in it. I looked down and gasped in pleasure. In my hand was a rose carved perfectly out of silver. It was detailed down to the tiniest thorn. I clutched it to my chest and sat on the couch deep in thought.
