#Paranormal Author Feature: L. Bachman

Writer Realness

L. Bachman

As a writer I've been asked and heard of many questions and sayings. I've caught myself asking and saying them as well, but for those who are unaware, you may not truly understand the trueness behind them, so I decided to help you beloved readers and curious minds out by compiling a list of sayings, questions, or randomness that have passed over a writer’s fingertips or that has been asked to writers. Please note the satire.

'I need my editor to edit my online conversations.' - You may find yourself chatting up a writer and their conversational skills nose dived right into typo-land. This doesn't mean they write this way; just mean they've become tired or simply stopped caring. Editors are our saving grace and sometimes we just wish our editor would edit our conversations and make them pretty and professional.

'Don't piss me off; I'll kill you in my next book.' - This is way more serious than you originally realized. Writers take inspiration from everything, I do mean everything, and it's been known that writers have used names, physical descriptions, personalities, and even real people within their books whether as a hero, that swoon-worthy boy toy, or even the most vile creature they can come up with.

'I always have a notebook and pen.' - Yes, this too is more real than you'd think. We might type away on a computer to work, but a notepad and pencil is never outside of arm's reach. Some of us will wake in the middle of the night with some nightmare or weird dream inspiring us, hark the saintly notepad! Scribbles, doodles, and random disembodied conversations will be found all over these like a high school teen's crush. Hearts, stick-figures, or whatever it maybe you see we have a complete idea behind it, that stick-figure is an awful werewolf dominant in a world we want to write and you'd never know it. Hey you never know you might even see the initials of beloved characters inside of a heart with an arrow right through it.

'You're so lucky to be published, was it hard?' - YES! So many people have this misconception that writing is easy because a lot of people can put a pen to a piece of paper, but the truth is it is very hard. We're our own worst enemies and writing is an endurance race against a fast approaching deadline. I've lost count how many times I've almost finished a chapter and tossed the entire thing because I didn't like it. If it doesn't 'feel' right it'll be gone quicker than it took to type it up.

'Coffee is a life.' - Tea, coffee, soda, energy drinks, it's not all healthy, but if it can help us stay up just a little bit longer and manage a conversation without a grumpy cat escaping to the forefront we're on it, all about it, and will buy the shirt with a pretty scripted slogan.

'Cover collecting.' - Yup, we've all saw a cover and got excited about who made it, are they open to new clients, have anything for sale, or wondered if we could find someone to reproduce it for our own use. This could be the overall look of the cover to simply a couple used in it. You can see this in action when several books will have a couple featured on it from different authors. Now, that doesn’t mean authors are always doing this, graphic artist too, sometimes it’s merely an appealing picture we came across and happens to fall this way after publication, but sometimes behind the pretty covers is the shame-filled (or even shameless) collecting.

'More than just a writer...' - In the indie and self-publishing world many of us are not just writers. We have other skills, barter them, at times, with other writers, and provide other services. You may meet the writer that also is a marketing genius that provides help through their blog. You will also meet the writer that does the covers for other writers and you can hire them to help you recreate or create something new and beautiful. We're all more than just writers, just in our own ways.

This is just a few and I'm sure there are tons of things floating about in the world of writing.

About L. Bachman:
L. Bachman is a Texas born writer. She currently lives in northern Alabama with her family. She's been writing for over fifteen years. She was honored as a youth with recognition in poetry. Developing her writing skills and her artistic abilities she went on to work with companies supplying art for commercials.

She has contributed to several websites over the years with articles under a few pen names, but now she's known as L. Bachman and in 2014 stepped into the world of self-publishing with a romance novel entitledThen and Now. Despite receiving good reviews, she unpublished the book and canceled the follow up book to begin writing in the thriller fiction genre with a story called Maxwell Demon that will launch her Blasphemer Series.

When not writing, she is spending time with her family, reading, and helping other authors through her indie industry services website providing book covers, interviews, and giving others in the indie industry a platform to voice themselves and their own projects. Helping other authors is a way for her to lend a hand while strongly understanding how hard the industry can be and trying to make it not so difficult for newcomers that are indie or self-publishing.

Unleashed: New Hot #paranormal read by Rachel McClellan

What I’ve Learned From Watching Movies
Top Ten Countdown

10. Always turn the lights on when you walk into an empty house at night.

9. To hot wire a car, all you have to do is touch a bunch of wires together under the dashboard.

8. While driving in the car with a passenger, looking at the road is optional.

7. One man shooting at 20 men has a better chance of killing them than 20 men firing at 1 man.

6. It’s never a good idea to build a home on top of an old cemetery. “You moved the headstones, but you forgot the bodies!”

5. An electric fence, powerful enough to kill a dinosaur will cause no lasting damage to an eight-year-old child.

4. If a dark haired, serious-faced man approaches you with an air compressor in his hand, run.

3. If you discover your super rich boyfriend is a dark, super hot vigilante at night, don’t leave him. Accept him for who he is.

2. The more a man and a woman hate each other, the more likely they will fall in love.

1. If a vampire sneaks into your room to watch you sleep, it’s not cool. It’s creepy.

Seventeen-year-old Claire Williams’ tough upbringing has taught her how to throw a punch or two to survive, especially when it involves a man’s unwanted attention. But her strength waivers when she visits Bodian Dynamics, a medical research facility, and stumbles upon classified information—someone has stolen a drug that not only changes a person's appearance, but will also unleash a dark and evil alter ego. After an intimidating security guard threatens the lives of her friends if she speaks to anyone about the incident, Claire pretends the drug never existed. That is until she meets Gage, a teenage boy who doesn’t seem to have a conscience and who is hell-bent on making her just like him by unleashing her dark side. But Claire knows a secret—he can only die while in his normal state. And since Gage knows personal information about her, Claire thinks she knows who it is: either her best friend or her recent boyfriend. And once she figures out which boy Gage is hiding behind, she’s going to kill him, even if it breaks her heart.

My Review:
I loved this YA take on Jekyll and Hyde. It was a dark, moody, and suspenseful ride from beginning to end. As usual, Rachel McClellan's writing style keeps me on the edge of my seat and reading late into the night when I was supposed to be sleeping.

This story lets you see the darker nature that resides in us all and asks the question of what would happen if that nature was enhanced scientifically. The story is told from two different points of view and those characters were rich in their flaws. I especially loved how the book kept me guessing on who had been Unleashed.

This is a fast paced story that will send chills down your spine and may make you sleep with a light on.

Excerpt:
A burning grew in his chest, and at first Albert thought it was because he had exerted

himself too much, but when he stopped and the searing heat continued, he knew. He frantically

looked around. The forest's darkness surrounded him and pushed on him at all sides. There was

no help in this place, or anywhere for that matter. Gage was coming and there was nothing he

could do to stop it.

Albert sunk to the cold ground, a sharp stick pressing against his back. If only it would

puncture his heart.

"Don't think like that," he heard Gage whisper, but it was his own lips moving. And then

he slipped away into a terrible black hole.

Gage stood up, smiled into the night, and stretched. His bones popped into place as

they finished their transformation. "So they think they can get rid of me?" he said to the

creatures hidden within the forest. He laughed long and hard. The sound was heavy and cold

and full of such evil that it bathed the forest in poison, silencing even the crickets.

"We’ll see about that," he said and disappeared into the darkness.

#Paranormal Author Feature: Debbie Herbert

Thanks letting me visit with your readers today Noree! I decided to share some of the most asked questions I get.

Why do you write about mermaids?

I see mermaids as symbols of feminine beauty and strength. My theory is that even (or especially) young girls are drawn to the whole idea of mermaids because archetypically they represent power balanced with maidenly grace. Besides, who wouldn’t want to be a beautiful mermaid playing with dolphins all day long? I’ve always loved the ocean and beaches and as a child fantasized about what magic might lay deep beneath the water.

What books have been published?

So far two of my four books contracted with Harlequin have been published.

Siren’s Secret: In the dark waters of an Alabama bayou, two deadly secrets collide. A mermaid witnesses a serial killer disposing the body of his latest victim. He can’t afford to let her live to tell the tale. She can’t afford to let a human reveal her true identity.

With each becoming the hunter and the hunted, a lethal game ensues.

Caught in the middle is the sheriff who suspects his girlfriend is keeping secrets and knows something about the killer terrorizing the bayou he’s sworn to protect.

Siren’s Treasure: Takes up the story of Shelly’s cousin Jet, and is scheduled to be released this fall by Harlequin Nocturne. In many ways, Jet is the opposite of Shelly. She’s physically strong and mentally tough but nevertheless, has a hidden vulnerability that’s exposed when her ex-boyfriend pirate is released from prison and returns to the bayou.

It’s The Hunt for Red October meets Southern Gothic.

Book Three of the series, Siren’s Call, will be Lily’s story. Lily is the mysterious siren who enchants men with her voice . . . until she meets the one man impervious to her charms. This book will be released in 2015.

What are the five best things about being a writer?

a. The flexible hours

b. The sloppy – er – casual work attire

c. Satisfaction of creative expression

d. It’s exciting – you never know what might show up in the next email from a reader or editor or agent.

What scene did you have the most fun writing?

In SIREN’S TREASURE, I have a scene where the main character, a shape-shifting mermaid named Jet, is swimming with a captive dolphin and discovers why the dolphin has been so sick.

Tell us about yourself

I’m a paranormal romance writer, mermaid lover and college football fanatic (Roll Tide!) I live in the Deep South, have been happily married for over three decades and have two grown sons. I truly believe love is magical, pizza and diet Coke are dietary staples, and that cats are the coolest creatures roaming the planet.

Thanks for letting me visit! Readers – what is your favorite paranormal romance character and why? I’m giving away a free Kindle copy of either SIREN’S SECRET or SIREN’S TREASURE to one commenter. USA only.

#Fantasy Author Feature: Jeri Smith

Hello! My name is Jeri Smith, known now in the writing world as J.R. Smith. Allow me to introduce to you my debut novel - a project that has been in the works since 2008. It is entitled Fate’s Crossing (The Black Blood Legacies #1). It is a three part series that follows Liana Scott and Sean Stevens through their journey to either secure the worldly balance or to postpone the inevitable. It hit me upside the head one day in October 2008 and just begged to be written down. I felt like I was losing my mind it was bothering me so bad. This is why Liana feels like she is losing her mind in the beginning until everything is explained. I thought it would be an interesting way to manifest my writing process directly in the series. BBL started off as something quite different and upon merging it with another side project, it took off like fire and became what you see today. Part 2, the complications, The Midnight Trial should hopefully be out by the end of 2015 with part 3 Full Circle coming by the end of the next year (2016).

In the precise moment that she stepped on a plane from Tulsa, OK to Los Angeles, CA, Liana Scott’s race against her own fate began. Bombarded with disembodied voices, lucid dreams and waking visions, Liana, 24, finds herself feeling like she is losing her mind. When she crosses paths with Sean Stevens, 26, and is put under his protection, her reality swiftly changes from civilian to the next possible martyr. Sponsored by her friends and family and seemingly reliving a past not her own, she must fulfill an ancient prophecy and go on a worldly journey in order to see it through. First, Sean and his fellow members of The Order Faction must make sure she is ready for the task ahead. Preparing the Valten and keeping her safe is only phase one of a three-part tale. Only one thing has the ability to condemn this mission to failure: the ultimate star-crossed love.

Do not forget!

A DOSE OF BRIMSTONE ARC Copies Signup!

Hello minions! I have a great opportunity for anyone interested. I plan on releasing A Dose of Brimstone in July 2015 and I am looking for interested ARC Readers.

So first, let me explain what an ARC is:
An ARC is an Advance Reader Copy of the book that is given out for the purpose of reviews. Theses are not the final copy. In most cases the ARC will have been written, revised, and edited, however it has probably not gone through final copy-editing and proofreading. There may be a few mistakes and errors.

So, as I said I'm looking for interested readers who are willing to leave reviews at the release. I will be sending out ARC copies on May 1st. The sign up sheet is HERE.

Here are a few requests I have of my ARC readers:

1. I would like the ARC readers to have previously read A Prescription for Delirium. A Dose of Brimstone is the second book in the series so this make sense, right? To help with this, I'm willing to give out free copies for anyone who hasn't read A Prescription for Delirium who is willing to read it and review. There is a place on the form to respond if you would like a copy I will send those out before May.

2. Be willing to post a review on Amazon the day of release. I will send a email reminder at this time. If possible I love a review posted on Goodreads at any time.

3. An interest in the book. I know, this seems like a no brainer, but you would be surprised. This is an Urban Fantasy/Dark Fantasy with a lot of action and a little romance. It is an adult book that contains violence, language, and sex.

Blurb:
Try a little Brimstone to bring out the demon in you.

Gabby thought the brimstone drug was destroyed. However, now a multitude of demons plague New York, and from the look of their scaly skin, the drug has taken hold of the Big Apple. When Gabby finally uncovers the mastermind behind it all, she realizes this battle won't be easily won. Faust is unlike any demon Gabby has seen before, capable of possessing multiple entities at once; he’s even manipulated a corporation of vampires into spreading their own version of brimstone. If Gabby and the Van Helsing Organization don't put an end to Faust's plan, it'll soon be Hell on Earth.

One again, the signup form is HERE for anyone interested. :)
